![]() On 6 March, the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Terry Hall, unveiled the plaques awarded to commemorate the Portsmouth Society's design awards for the year 2009. They were for Best New Building, jointly, to Admiralty Quarter, Queen Street, designed by David Richmond and Partners for developers Crest Nicholson and to Priory View a sparkling block of flats near Fratton Bridge for the Downland Housing Association. Admiralty Quarter is especially notable for its internal car park built to provide on its roof the enclosed garden which is shielded from view by the surrounding flats. Priory View was noted for the proportions and good size of its flats. The best landscaping award went to St Jude's School, Old Portsmouth, for its local history roundel designed and built by the pupils assisted by artist Kevin Dean. The Best Re-use award was given for the re-use of the former telephone exchange building in St Ronan's Road. This has been imaginatively converted into living space for Mrs Melanie Stow by architect Stuart Bone. Roger James |
