You will no doubt be aware that the Government is conducting a review of
its naval dockyards. What is decided could drastically alter Portsmouth
for ever and in so very many ways we are probably not able to yet envisage. If they decide to close the naval base then the ramifications of such a decision would reverberate for years and for generations to come. The local newspaper for Portsmouth, The News, is collecting signatures for a petition to be presented to the Secretary of State for Defence to demand that the base should not be closed.
